TV Writers Aren’t The Only Ones Who Should Strike

I am not sure how many of you follow the news closely and know about the TV writers strike that began today. Basically, members of the Writers Guild, including people like Tina Fey and other major writers, are picketing to get the money they deserve. The networks currently are putting their television shows for streaming and download on the internet, but the writers are not getting compensated for this. The networks continue to make money from internet ad revenue and other sources, while the writers only earn their cut from actual television.

As you may know my music has been on television shows such as MTV’s “Laguna Beach,” “The Hills,” ABC’s “Men in Trees,” and many more. Songwriters like myself, who have music on television shows, collect payment and royalties from the television end–but I feel we have been getting ripped on digital end. These shows continue to be downloaded from iTunes or streamed over the networks websites collecting ad revenue with our songs on them, but we see nothing.

A lot of songwriters should strike, and songwriter organizations like ASCAP and BMI should get behind them, but we can’t. Because, as soon as we say they can’t use the songs until we get paid fairly, they will move onto the next songwriter. And they know how desperate some songwriters can be, especially at the early stages of their career, and take advantage of them. I am not saying that everyone out there is an amazing songwriter, but there are certainly more songwriters than there are TV writers.

I don’t have a solution at this time–I just wanted to address everyone. The music industry already has so many other problems, so let’s deal with this one and get it out of the way.

My Music On Two More TV Shows This Fall!

As some of you might know, my music was on MTV’s “Laguna Beach” and ABC Family’s “Three Moons Over Milford” last fall. But this fall, I have landed two more television placements on MTV’s “The Hills” and ABC’s “Men in Trees.” Here is the news story you can find at Yahoo News:

Up and coming 19-year old singer-songwriter Chase Emery continues his impressive move into the world of licensing music for television by signing two more deals with MTV and ABC.

San Luis Obispo, CA (Billboard Publicity Wire) September 18, 2007 — Up and coming singer-songwriter Chase Emery continues his impressive move into the world of licensing his music for television and other media with two new blockbuster fall season TV deals.

At the young age of 19, Chase Emery has now placed his songs on four popular television series, with more in the works. His latest achievements are two placements for the 2007 fall season. The song, “I Can’t Wait” is set to be played on ABC’s second season of the hit series “Men in Trees” on October 26, and also on an upcoming episode of MTV’s highly popular “The Hills.” The song “I Can’t Wait” is one of twelve tracks from his May 2007 release of his latest album “Definition.”

Last year, Chase licensed “I’m not Going Anywhere” to MTV’s “Laguna Beach” and “Just to Be There” to ABC Family Channel’s “Three Moons over Milford.” Both of these songs were from his 2005 EP, “Fuel.” Additionally, his music has been licensed for social networking web sites like OneTrueMedia and YouTube’s #2 all time most-subscribed channel, LonelyGirl15.

Charles Levan, owner of Blue Buddha Entertainment, and the agent responsible for these television licensing deals, says of Chase Emery, “Chase Emery’s music is both heartfelt and friendly. He tells it like it is. From love tunes to ‘life as we know it,’ Chase is a talented singer-songwriter that’s ‘one to hear.’”

Chase Emery’s next live performance is on November 6, 7:00 pm, at the Knitting Factory in Hollywood.

Kids Groups Are Topping The Charts

So it seems like some of the most popular music out right now is music targeted at young teenagers between the age of 8 to 16 (I could be wrong on the exact ages). The past few times I have gone to iTunes the highest selling songs and albums have been from kids groups or groups focused at kids, like Aly & AJ, the Jonas Brothers, or High School Musical. I don’t think there is anything wrong with it, I just find it interesting. In fact, on the iTunes page for my new album, “Definition,” it said my listeners also bought Aly & AJ.

Personally, I don’t remember listening to many kids groups when I was younger. In junior high I was listening to bands like Crazy Town and 3 Doors Down. I was never into hearing what kids my age had to sing about. Music was more like an older brother that I could get advice from.

I feel like there have been less kid music stars over the last few years after Hanson and others who got their fame at a young age, but that the idea is starting to come back. We’ll just have to see how long it lasts and how long their careers last. It will be interesting to see if they continue with their fame throughout their adult years.
